Cat is the manager of a clothing, home and gift store. She spends her typical day managing her staff, working on the floor and with customers, ringing up customers, and performing the small duties required in a shop. She went to school for painting, but began working in retail while in school and fell in love with the work. She tells us that she would be so much wiser today if she had known to be kind to people she met and listened to their stories when she was younger.
Store managers supervise a retail organization's staff, meet customer needs and plan and coordinate sales, merchandising and budgeting. In order to effectively perform the multitude of tasks required, managers should work well under pressure and with deadlines, and have significant experience in retail business and human resources. They also need strong leadership, interpersonal and multitasking skills.
Limited on-the-job training. Most managers will have worked in retail previously as salespeople.
