I'm in charge of all of the day-to-day managing details from putting together the schedule for our ice rink to hiring staff, supervising them, advertising and promoting programs. I also teach skating, so I frequently pitch in and help out with the classes. Answering questions for customers, dealing with issues and complaints from customers. Dealing with operations details like making sure the ice is frozen and then the equipment the freezes the ice is working properly. It's lots of-- just managing lots of different little aspects of the business. My educational background is I do you have both a bachelor's and a master's degree. I grew up ice skating. And that's how I started getting my experience with ice rinks. Went off to college, got a bachelor's degree in psychology and environmental studies but wasn't really sure what I wanted to do when I finished college. So I went on to a master's degree. And I got that in sports psychology from Miami University in Ohio. And while I was there, was a graduate assistant at the ice rink teaching some of the skating classes and started learning sort of more what was involved in running an ice rink. And then that led me actually to a job on campus. So then when I moved out here in California, that's kind of where my life background had led me and ended up working here at the rink. What do I wish I knew before I started my job? I probably wish I had a little more background in some of the human resources aspects of my job. Managing people, supervising. Just knowing how to handle difficulties with staff, managing performance, and discipline issues as well as reward and incentive issues. I didn't have much experience with that when I started. So would've loved to have had a lot more knowledge about that. As the manager of the rink, I'm also, like I mentioned, responsible for some of the operational aspects. And I don't have much of a mechanical background at all. So when we have issues with the compressors or the Zamboni, I'm very dependent on some of our other staff that does have a more mechanical background. So that would have been nice too.
